Propane Grill Tank Expiration: What You Need to Know

If you’ve ever looked closely at your propane tank, you may have noticed a series of stamped numbers on its collar. One of those numbers is the tank’s manufacture date—and it matters more than you might think.

So, What Does That Expiration Date Actually Mean?

Propane tanks don’t last forever. In fact, most portable grill-sized tanks (typically 20-pound cylinders) are only certified for 12 years from the date of manufacture. After that, they’re considered expired and cannot be refilled unless they’ve been inspected and re-certified.

Why Is There an Expiration Date?

Propane tanks are built to handle pressure, but over time, wear and tear can compromise the tank’s structural integrity. Exposure to the elements, corrosion, dents, and valve damage can all pose serious safety risks. The 12-year rule ensures that tanks in circulation are safe to refill, transport, and use.

What Happens After 12 Years?

Once your tank hits its 12-year mark, you have two options:

  • Exchange it for a new one at Valley Energy, quick and easy.
  • Have it re-certified through an approved inspection process at Valley Energy, which can add up to 5 more years of use.

Tanks that have been re-certified will be stamped with a new date and an “E” or similar marking to indicate extension.

How to Find the Expiration Date

Look at the collar (the metal ring at the top of your tank). You’ll see a date in the format MM-YY. For example, 06-21 means the tank was manufactured in June 2021, and it will expire in June 2033 (unless re-certified).

Quick Checklist for Inspecting Your Tank Before Attending Grillz

1. Find the date stamp (MM‑YY) on the collar.
2. Calculate age: 12 years from manufacture equals expiration date.
3. Look for a recertification letter (ends in “E”) to extend usability.
4. Inspect the tank visually: rust, dents, damaged valve, missing collar are warning signs.
5. If expired and uncertified, exchange the tank with Valley Energy for an additional price.

How to Transport a Propane Tank Safely

Before heading to Grillz or any refill station, it’s important to follow these safety tips for transporting your propane tank:

  • Keep the tank upright at all times. This prevents liquid propane from leaking and ensures proper function.
  • Secure the tank in your vehicle. Use a box, crate, or bungee cords to keep it from tipping or rolling.
  • Never leave the tank in a hot, enclosed vehicle. Heat buildup can increase internal pressure and pose a safety risk.
  • Keep windows open slightly. This ensures proper ventilation in case of a slow leak.

When in doubt, ask a Valley Energy team member for guidance. We’re happy to help you handle and secure your tank safely.

Why It Matters Before Events Like Grillz

Planning to refill your tank at our next Grillz event? Check that expiration date first! Valley Energy cannot refill expired or uncertified tanks, but we’ll happily exchange them on-site for a small additional cost so you can keep grilling without delay.

Important Reminders:

  • Propane tanks expire 12 years after manufacture.
  • Expired tanks can’t be refilled unless re-certified.
  • Re-certified tanks are valid for up to 5 additional years.
  • You can find the date on the tank’s collar.
  • Valley Energy offers safe and convenient tank exchanges—especially during Grillz events.
  • Always transport your tank upright and secured, and avoid leaving it in a hot vehicle.

Stay safe, stay fueled, and let Valley Energy keep your grill ready to go.
