Were your heating bills higher than usual this past winter? This is probably why…
As the winter of 2025-2026 rolled in, it brought an unexpected chill to Northern Virginia, a stark contrast to the mild winters of previous years. These colder temperatures caused many to see a spike in fuel consumption, requiring multiple deliveries to keep their homes warm this winter. Many found themselves facing unpredictable and often overwhelming heating bills. If you’re looking for a way to manage these costs effectively, Valley Energy’s SmartPay Program might just be the solution you need.
Winter 2025-2026 Facts
Looking back at this winter, here are some of the facts:
The lowest temperature recorded in Northern Virginia so far this winter (2025–2026) was 8°F, occurring on February 9, 2026
Although January as a whole was slightly warmer than average, the first 10 days of February 2026 brought the most intense cold of the year, with four different days recording lows of 15°F or below. The “feels like” temperatures were significantly more brutal during these periods. On January 1st and February 7th, wind gusts up to 52 mph made it feel like -6°F and -2°F at times.
This winter, Northern Virginia has seen over 8-12 inches of snow with intense freezing resulting in “snowcrete” covering roads, driveways, and yards.
Managing Winter Fuel Costs
With temperatures as cold as they were, systems were having to work extra hard to maintain ideal temperatures. Managing winter fuel bills can feel overwhelming when you require multiple deliveries during the heating season. Valley Energy offers the SmartPay plan to our customers to help make those heating bills less overwhelming and more approachable to customers on a budget. The SmartPay Program is designed to provide a smoother, more predictable approach to managing your heating expenses.
What is SmartPay?
SmartPay works by spreading your annual heating oil or propane costs over 11 equal monthly payments. This plan is based on an estimate of your annual fuel consumption, ensuring that your heating bills remain consistent throughout the year. The 12th month is reserved for reconciliation, where any outstanding balance is settled. If your account shows a credit balance, you can choose to have it applied to future budget balances or refunded to you directly.
How SmartPay Can Help You
- Avoid Unpredictable Spikes: With the SmartPay Program, you can avoid the sudden spikes in heating bills that often come with harsh winter conditions. By paying a consistent, set amount each month, you can better manage your household budget.
- Manage Higher Fuel Usage: The colder winter meant many customers used more propane or heating oil than anticipated, resulting in frequent refills and higher bills. SmartPay helps mitigate these fluctuations by estimating your usage and spreading the cost over the year.
- Ease of Payment: SmartPay allows for automatic billing to a credit card or e-check, ensuring that your payments are timely and hassle-free.
